Admittedly, the plot presented obvious problems. While there are no records of OWI objections to Casablanca, it’s tough to imagine any.īreen was harder to please. Add in the scene where a group of bar patrons sing the French national anthem at the Germans mounting a rendition of “Die Wacht am Rhein,” and you have an excessively, even outrageously, patriotic film. Rick Blaine, the lone Yankee in a sea of European refugees and (presumably, though we hardly see any) African locals, finds his conscience as the Germans overtake Casablanca. The movie was firm about a few things: Nazis were evil and Americans, even the ones who were no good at being noble, were heroes. Namely, that America was going to win the war.Ĭasablanca presented few problems in that department. OWI officials began reviewing scripts just like the PCA, only instead of looking for sex stuff, they were making sure movies sent the right message. The Office of War Information (OWI) was established in June 1942 with the express mission to keep the public informed of news from the battlefront. But in this prelude to their own romance, they’ve stumbled upon one of Casablanca’s censored plotlines. It’s one of the flirty arguments the pair revisit throughout When Harry Met Sally, as they slowly fall for each other. Harry and Sally are debating the ending of Casablanca as they drive from Chicago to New York in 1977. Even Ingrid Bergman, which is why she gets on the plane at the end of the movie.” “Yes, and so would any woman in her right mind,” Sally says. “Than live with the man you’ve had the greatest sex of your life with, just because he owns a bar and that is all he does,” Harry finishes. ![]() That probably sounds very snobbish to you, but I don’t.” Harry continues, “You’d rather be in a passionless marriage - “ “And be the first lady of Czechoslovakia,” Sally interrupts. “I don’t want to spend the rest of my life in Casablanca married to a man who runs a bar. “Wouldn’t you rather be with Humphrey Bogart than the other guy?” Sally would not. “Of course she wants to stay,” Harry replies. “I don’t think she wants to stay,” Sally counters. That’s why he puts her on the plane,” Harry says. Hollywood Codebreakers: ‘Casablanca’ Disguises an Affair with a Dissolve ![]()
